How to Learn Portuguese
Whether going on a holiday or for a more permanent stay to any of these Portuguese-speaking countries, to learn Portuguese will always prove to be an asset rather than a hindrance. You'll also find the Portuguese influence in practically all four corners of the globe, from Africa to Europe to Asia, not to mention their contributions to popular world culture like the Bossa Nova.
To Learn Portuguese can be marginally easier and quicker for those who speak or have some knowledge of one of the other Latin languages such as Spanish, French or Italian. However, for the complete novice, it is not an insurmountable task and can be learned with not too much difficulty as long as one has the interest and commitment.
There are a variety of ways to learn Portuguese, and each individual should find the suitable method that works for him or her. Some people find that a classroom setting is more effective than perhaps a taped course, and some would say the opposite. Either way, practice and exposure to the language is a vital aspect, so once you've found the method that works for you, stick to it. And why not travel to a Portuguese-speaking destination to consider learning the language there.
Listed below are 6 ways to learn Portuguese and if you apply yourself to one or more of these methods you will be speaking, writing and thinking the Portuguese language in no time.
1. Take Portuguese Lessons
Sign up for a proper class at your local university, an adult education centre or at a language school. If the thought of returning to a classroom setting seems daunting or unsuitable for your schedule, check out the many places online or invest in some tapes or videos.
2. Speak Portuguese
This is where a class with other students and a teacher has its advantages as you can practice with each other. Speak to Portuguese, Brazilian or other Portuguese-speakers and et to know the culture - European or Brazilian, whatever interests you more.
3. Read Portuguese
Reading Portuguese can be a lot easier for beginners who are still unfamiliar with the confusing quick-flow of words in the spoken language. Reading Portuguese newspapers online, the latest copy of Portuguese magazines - then listing words you don't understand - makes good homework.
4. Write in Portuguese
The internet has many areas to do this, through forums, message boards, chat rooms and so on. Practice on your own as well (less embarrassing for beginners), or find a penpal to correspond with.
5. Listen to Portuguese
Listen to Brazilian and other Portuguese-worded music.
6. Watch Portuguese
Watch Portuguese / Brazilian films with English subtitles. Watch English Films with Portuguese subtitles (easy with a DVD subtitle menu).
